Pet Insurance FAQs

Petinsurance.ie is a brand of Cover-More Blue Insurance Services Limited, offering Pet Insurance policies for cats and dogs in Ireland. These policies are underwritten by Burns & Wilcox Global Solutions Europe B.V. for and on behalf of the insurer, Zavarovalnica Sava d.d. ('Sava').

We offer three different types of Pet Insurance, allowing you to choose the cover that suits your needs and budget.

Time Limited

Time Limited Pet Insurance covers your pet for a specific illness or injury for a set period, usually up to 12 months from when the condition first starts. After this period, or once the financial limit is reached (whichever comes first), the condition will no longer be covered. At Petinsurance.ie you can choose three vet fee levels. Learn more about time limited insurance to find out more.

Maximum Benefit

Maximum Benefit policies provide a fixed amount of money for each illness or injury your pet might have. There is no time limit on how long you can claim for the condition, you can continue to claim until the maximum amount is reached. After the set limit is used up for that particular condition, it will no longer be covered. At Petinsurance.ie you can choose three vet fee levels. Learn more about maximum benefit insurance to find out more.

Lifetime

Lifetime Pet Insurance offers the most comprehensive cover. It will help you pay for your pet’s ongoing illnesses or injuries throughout their life, as long as you renew the policy each year. The vet fee limit resets annually, meaning you can claim for long-term or recurring conditions year after year, giving you and your pet long-term peace of mind. At Petinsurance.ie you can choose three vet fee levels. Learn more about lifetime cover to find out more.
Our Pet Insurance is designed to help with unexpected vet expenses, such as for accidents or illnesses. It does not cover routine or preventative treatments such as vaccinations, neutering, or flea, tick and worming treatments, for example. Please remember that to keep your cover valid your pet must have a yearly health check - up with a vet, including dental check. For more information please read your policy wording document.
There is no upper age limit for insuring your pet with us. We can insure puppies and kittens from eight weeks of age.

An excess is the amount you’ve chosen to pay towards a claim. This applies per condition, per policy year. When you get a quote, you can choose an excess from €75 to €275.

The bill share (also known as co-payment) is a fixed percentage amount you will need to pay towards a claim. If your pet is 5 years or older, a 15% bill share applies to your policy. The bill share is calculated on the balance left after your chosen excess has been deducted.

Example of how this will work if you’ve chosen a €75 excess with the 15% bill share:

Amount Claimed €1,500
Less Fixed Charges -€75 €1,425
Less Percentage Excess 15% of €1,425 = -€213.75 €1,211.25
Total Paid to You €1,211.25
Total Paid by You €75 + €213.75 = €288.75
You can find the excess and bill share amount for your policy on your Policy Schedule.
We don’t provide cover for any pre-existing conditions. You’re unable to claim for any illnesses that first occurred or showed symptoms within the first 14 days, or any accidents or injuries which occurred within the first 2 days of the cover start date of your policy.

Making a claim is simple. You can submit your claim online through your Your Paws account, by selecting the claims tab and completing the online form.

You can also give us a call to register your claim with our claims team (select option 4): 01-4854118.

Our claims team can pay your vet directly. Please ask your vet if they’re happy to do this.

You can also ask your vet to submit the claim on your behalf, by clicking on the link on our claims page.

Yes, you can choose to add our optional Away from Home cover to your policy, and we will cover your pet for travel within the UK or European Union. To find out more, please see the policy wording here.

We try to keep any price increases as small as possible but as our pets grow older, they need a little extra TLC (and maybe a few more treats). Just like us, they can experience health changes as they age. Whether it’s some stiffness in the joints or the occasional trip to the vet, older pets often need more frequent medical attention. We put a blog together here.

If your pet has needed medical treatment this year, there’s a chance they might need it again in the future. With new treatments, cutting-edge technology, and better overall care, more conditions can be treated today than ever before. While this is great news for your pet’s health, it can also mean higher treatment costs.

You can pay in full by credit or debit card, or by direct debit. You can also choose to spread the cost and pay in monthly instalments via direct debit. There is no extra fee if you choose to pay in monthly instalments.

We will not automatically renew (auto-renew) your policy when it runs out, unless you tell us to. Each year we will notify you by email 5 weeks before the renewal date of your policy and tell you about any changes to the premium or the policy terms and conditions.

Pet insurance is designed to cover your pet year after year so that you can focus on caring for your pet and not worry about unexpected vet bills.

You can opt in for auto renewal at any time by logging into your Your Paws account or calling us on 01-4854118.
